“ MARY, Mother of God ”
Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution, Lumen Gentium, recognizing the role of the Virgin Mary in the mystery of salvation as Mother of God. “Wishing in His supreme goodness and wisdom to effect the redemption of the world, “when the fullness of time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman… that we might receive the adoption of sons” (Gal 4:4-5)”. He for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit from the Virgin Mary. This divine mystery of salvation is revealed to us and continued in the Church, which the Lord established as His body. Joined to Christ the Head and in unity of fellowship with all His, the faithful must in the first place reverence the memory of the glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ” (LG, 52). This, the precise title “Mother of God” goes back at least to the third and fourth century. The Council of Ephesus in 431 insisted that the Holy Fathers were right in calling the Holy Virgin, Theotokos. In the Greek term Theotokos, which means God-bearer, it became the touchstone of truth in the Church’s teaching about the mystery of the Incarnation.
